JOHNSTOWN, Pa — The Johnstown Chiefs skated out of town almost three years ago.

A junior hockey league has shown interested in bringing a team back to the Cambria County War Memorial, but 6 News has learned that a new brand of minor league hockey wants to start its own franchise.

ROANOKE, VA -- Dreams of bringing minor league hockey back to Roanoke are even closer to becoming reality.

Between the city’s hockey history, a fan-run facebook page with nearly 1,700 followers, and a recent charity game that more than 6,000 people showed up to, the Northern Professional Hockey League says it’s plain and simple.

“Roanoke is a hockey city,” said Mike Chighisola, Director of Franchise Development for the NPHL.

Roanoke, VA – The Northern Professional Hockey League (NPHL) recently took part in Roanoke’s annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game.

It was another record-setting year for the Guns vs. Hoses charity ice hockey game! The 9th annual game between area law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel set a new attendance record with 6,100 fans, topping last year’s crowd of 5,700. More importantly, the event raised a record $27,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, breaking last year’s total of $20,500.

HUNTINGTON -- Hockey back in Huntington?

Not yet, but the city has received the endorsement of the new Northern Professional Hockey League as a candidate for a charter franchise in 2012-13.

Bill Sawyers and Lenny Sundahl, who are part of the Huntington Ice Sports Coalition, made the announcement Thursday. The new league also expressed interest in Charleston and Pikeville, Ky.
