Ask the Commish
You can ask NPHL Commissioner Chuck Harrison questions. E-mail your questions to info@nphlhockey.com
Question: Jamey
What is the approximate deadline to field a team?
Answer:
The deadline for all new teams in the NPHL is July 1st of each year, so the league can generate a schedule and teams can promote their dates.
Question: Mike
I'm a devoted hockey fan from the city of Richmond, Virginia. I heard about your league possibly trying to get some teams in former cities that were once home to ECHL teams. I think this is a great idea & I hope this works. It has been 3 years since the Capital City & it has not been easy. Richmond has been known to be a hockey city & in the past 2 leagues, Richmond has been in the top 3 in attendance. I do have a couple of questions.
How soon will we hear about other markets joining the league? Do you have any plans for the different markets (facebook, newspapers, tv, radio?) How much will the fans get involve?
I look forward to hearing back from you & hope to help get the sport back that I miss.
Answer:
The NPHL is working on other markets to join the league. At this point we feel strongly about many of the teams on “OUR WISH LIST”. As soon as we put the required pieces together, we will post it on our official web site and other media outlets. There is a lot of interest in the league, especially from your city, Johnstown and Roanoke. The fans will be able to get involved as quickly as possible, as our communities and fans are our number one priority. We are currently very popular on Facebook and we will have Press Releases to the local papers, T.V and radio in the near future
Question: Brian V
I run a group known as Hockey in Richmond on Facebook. We chronicle the history of the game in our city and display a deep desire for hockey. First and foremost, I'd like to say thank you for considering Richmond, Virginia as a market for the 2012-2013 season. We're all very excited about the possibility of hockey returning to the Capital City. I have a few questions I would like to ask for the "Ask the Commish" segment on the website.
- With the NPHL being "AA" and the NPHL2 being "A", what does the offer for future affiliations with other leagues such as the ECHL or AHL?
- When can we expect to see the league take shape as far as team offices being put together and promotion of franchises?
- If Richmond gets an "AA" level club, will we see the return of the Renegades and their black and orange.
Answer:
The NPHL is going to be a “AA” league. As far as the NPHL 2, we are hoping the All-American league will fill that void, and we will then work with the AAHL. The NPHL will be a totally independent league from the AHL and ECHL. Affiliations with such leagues would drive the operating budgets up, and that was one of the reasons that ECHL teams vacated the markets we are hoping for. As soon as we have completed the "NPHL BUSINESS AND MARKETING PLAN” and release it, things will start to take shape. Currently the offices are located in Canada, but will be moved at a later date. If Richmond gets a team, and we are hoping they will, the name and colors will be discussed by the ownership group. We have been searching to discover if the name “Renegades” is owned by anyone.
Question From: hockey_guy_10_11
1st off thank you for your interest in public and taking some of your time to look through these questions here’s a few of my questions I have to ask
- What kind of attendances do you expect on each team
- What kind of salaries will players be getting on average, will players receive housing, equipment and ECT.
- Where do you expect most of your new players to come from, (e.g. NCAA or ACHA D.1 or 3, or Jr.A tier 1, 2 or 3 or other professional leagues)?
Answer:
We are looking to have crowds over 3,000 on average in the beginning. With our fans and communities being our highest priority, we expect that to grow.
The salaries in the NPHL are about $450.00 per week on average. All players will receive housing and full team equipment, such as pants, gloves, helmets the first year.
We expect our players to come from all those places you mentioned. You never know where a hockey player will come from.
Question From: Jamey
How many teams you think will be in league’s 1st year and how many games in the season?
Answer:
We expect to have 6 to 8 teams the first year. That is our goal. But we are more concerned with having strong ownership and strong teams, than we are the number of teams. Each team will play 70 games (35 home, 35 away).
